I build fast, accessible, maintainable websites for small businesses and education platforms. Barry Lee
About Me – Web Designer & Front‑End Developer in Essex
I’m Barry Lee, a web designer and front‑end developer based in Essex with over 25 years of experience. I build clean, fast, semantic websites for small businesses, educators, and local organisations. My focus is on accessibility, maintainability, and long‑term sustainability — no bloat, no clutter, just purposeful design.
I found my love of computing way back in the late 1990s and early 2000s. I built computers, learnt how to fix issues with them, refurbished old laptops that still had life in them, and all the while I worked to learn the latest forms of HTML and CSS. My passion lies in building projects that are sustainable, accessible, and uniquely suited to their purpose.
I currently work at a SEN provision, where I run one of our school sites and create content for parents and carers. This includes building web pages from the ground up and ensuring they work seamlessly on both mobile and desktop.
Website Projects
Here are a couple of websites I have worked on:
Biology Bricks
Biology Bricks is a long‑term educational project I’ve been designing, building, and refining for over six years. It began as a simple idea: create a clear, structured, distraction‑free resource that helps GCSE students understand biology one concept at a time.
The site breaks complex topics into small, digestible “bricks” of information, each one carefully structured for readability and long‑term maintainability. I’ve rebuilt the layout multiple times as the project evolved, introducing a scalable CSS architecture, a consistent visual rhythm, and a flexible content model.
The project includes custom illustrations, responsive layouts, accessibility‑focused markup, and Schema.org integration. Because the site is used by students, teachers, and parents, performance and clarity have always been the priority.
After six years of continuous iteration, Biology Bricks has become a showcase of my approach to front‑end development: clean, semantic, maintainable, and built to last.
Exceptional Ideas Ltd
Exceptional Ideas began as a fast, functional build — something created quickly to meet an immediate need. Over three half‑terms, I rebuilt the entire site from the ground up using clean, semantic HTML5 and CSS3.
The redesign replaced the original patchwork layout with a predictable, modular system that’s easy to update and extend. Every component was rebuilt with purpose: simplified navigation, consistent spacing, a refined colour palette, and a layout that adapts smoothly across devices.
Throughout the rebuild, I used AI as a collaborative tool — not to generate the site, but to refine decisions, explore variations, and streamline the design process.
Exceptional Ideas now stands as a clear example of my approach to web design: semantic, fast, accessible, and built to last.
